Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) enters Airport Carbon Accreditation directly at Level 4

As one of the region’s busiest hubs, Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) is stepping up its climate action by joining Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 4. The airport, Japan’s busiest and among the top in the Asia-Pacific & Middle East region, has aligned its carbon reduction strategy with international climate goals, focusing on absolute emissions reductions while strengthening engagement with stakeholders across the airport ecosystem.

A range of measures is already in place to reduce emissions. The airport has installed 1,050 kW of solar panels on terminal rooftops to generate renewable electricity on site. It is also making use of geothermal energy by pre-cooling and pre-heating incoming air through underground systems, reducing the energy required for heating and cooling. Energy efficiency improvements are being implemented across the airport, including the replacement of fluorescent lighting with LED systems. In addition, the airport is advancing the electrification of its vehicle fleet and implementing the necessary charging infrastructure to support electric operations.

Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) is also collaborating with business partners to generate electricity and heat through hydrogen and to support the production and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels. These efforts form part of a longer-term objective to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
