Stuttgart Airport reaches Level 4, aligning carbon management ambition with global climate goals

Stuttgart Airport has achieved Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, recognising the airport’s continued progress in carbon management and its commitment to aligning its ambition with global climate goals. Since joining the programme in 2017, the airport has steadily strengthened its decarbonisation strategy, with a clear focus on absolute emissions reductions, stakeholder engagement and a long term pathway to net zero by 2040.

This achievement reflects years of practical action across the airport campus. Stuttgart has reduced CO₂ emissions from its apron fleet through electrification, renewable fuels and expanded electric ground power systems. Since 2018, all passenger buses and baggage tractors have run fully electric, saving around one million litres of diesel each year. The airport has also expanded its Solar Airport approach with additional photovoltaic installations, modernised all runway and airfield lighting with energy efficient LED systems, and introduced the world’s first fully electric 40 m³ aircraft refuelling truck in 2024.

More recently, Stuttgart Airport has continued to invest in charging infrastructure, high power charging for electric trucks and battery storage systems that help use surplus solar energy more effectively. Its Level 4 certification, together with the 2026 Eco-Innovation Award presented by ACI EUROPE in partnership with Airport Carbon Accreditation, highlights an airport that is turning climate ambition into measurable progress.
