Bordeaux Airport achieves Level 4 strengthening its pathway to net zero by 2029

septembre 3, 2026
Bordeaux Airport in France has reached Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, aligning its carbon management ambition with global climate goals, driving absolute emissions reductions across its operations, and strengthening collaboration with stakeholders across the airport community.
Having joined the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme in 2021, Bordeaux Airport has progressively strengthened its carbon management approach and reduced its own emissions by approximately 30% since 2019 across Scopes 1 and 2.
Bordeaux Airport is backing this ambition with significant investment in the transformation of its infrastructure. The airport has allocated €3.3 million to decarbonisation investments in 2025, with a further €10.6 million planned for 2026 and 2027. These investments include the electrification of aircraft parking areas, with 100% of parking stands set to be electrified by 2026, allowing aircraft to access electricity, air conditioning and heating while at the airport and reducing the need to use onboard auxiliary power units during stopovers.
Renewable energy is also central to the airport’s strategy. Bordeaux Airport is developing 3,000 m² of photovoltaic panels for self-consumption, alongside further projects involving solar carports with storage and rooftop installations. Together, these initiatives are expected to enable the airport to reach 28% self-consumption of its electricity by 2029. At P4, a major solar project will see 38,000 m² of photovoltaic panels installed across 19 canopies, providing a production capacity of 8.7 MWp and generating approximately 9 GWh of electricity annually from the first half of 2027, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 1,700 households.
Recognising that the airport’s transition cannot be achieved in isolation, Bordeaux Airport is also placing strong emphasis on collaboration across its ecosystem. It has established a Partnership Charter to mobilise companies across the airport community around emissions reduction and collective climate action. Ten partners have already signed the Charter, representing organisations from across the airport value chain and demonstrating the momentum behind a shared approach to decarbonisation.
Commenting on the achievement, Simon Dreschel, Chairman of the Board of Bordeaux Airport, said: “Level 4 certification recognises the progress we have made in reducing our own emissions, but it also represents a commitment to the wider airport community. Airlines, ground handling service providers, retailers, transport and industrial partners all have a role to play in reducing their carbon footprint. As an airport, we have a responsibility to lead this collective effort, help drive decarbonisation across our ecosystem and contribute to the sustainable transformation of our transport model and our region.”
