Berlin Brandenburg Airport becomes the first airport in Germany to reach Level 4

janvier 23, 2026

Berlin Brandenburg Airport has reached Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, becoming the first airport in Germany to reach this level of the programme. The achievement reflects the airport’s continued progress in strengthening carbon management and delivering absolute emissions reductions in line with global climate objectives.

The Level 4 accreditation was announced in the presence of Berlin’s Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner, underlining the significance of this milestone for both the airport and the wider region. At this level, airports demonstrate not only effective carbon management but also a clear commitment to reducing their absolute carbon footprint.

To reduce emissions, Berlin Brandenburg Airport is expanding the use of renewable energy and improving energy efficiency across its operations. Since early 2025, photovoltaic systems have been installed on several car park roofs, with further installations planned by 2030, including on areas adjacent to flight operations. Significant energy savings have already been achieved through measures such as the conversion of lighting in Terminal 1 to LED technology, optimised operation of technical systems and the reduction of airfield lighting during night hours. Together, these actions saved 4.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity in the last year alone.

The airport is also accelerating the transition to electric mobility on the apron. More than 120 charging points are currently available, and ground handling service providers have been subject to device specific electrification requirements since 2022, with higher thresholds planned from next year.

Olivier Jankovec, Director General at ACI EUROPE, said “Berlin Brandenburg Airport’s achievement of Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation reflects a clear commitment to transforming airport operations fully in line with European climate goals and the Paris Agreement. By aiming to reach net zero by 2045 and investing in renewable energy, electrifying ground transport, supporting Sustainable Aviation Fuels and strengthening cooperation with airlines and other partners, the airport is embedding carbon management into its long term strategy. Congratulations to the entire Berlin Airport team on this important milestone as the very first airport in Germany to achieve that level of carbon performance and management.

Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Berlin Brandenburg Airport mentioned: “The Level 4 Airport Carbon Accreditation award sends a strong signal in respect of our climate protection ambitions. In close cooperation with our partners at BER, we are taking responsibility for the consistent reduction of CO₂ emissions in airport operations. The common goal of German commercial airports is clear: CO₂-neutral airport operations by 2045 at the latest.”
