Shannon Airport strengthens third party engagement by achieving Level 3

Shannon Airport has achieved Level 3 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, marking a further step in its long term commitment to decarbonisation and climate responsibility. Operated by The Shannon Airport Group, the airport joined the programme in 2022 and is now strengthening its carbon management approach by actively engaging third party stakeholders in emissions reduction efforts.

Since 2018, Shannon Airport has reduced its carbon emissions by 43% through a combination of targeted energy efficiency measures and operational improvements. These include extensive LED lighting upgrades, enhancements to the Building Energy Management System, the electrification of airport vehicles, closer collaboration with airport partners and continued investment in renewable energy.

A major milestone was reached in November 2025 with the launch of Ireland’s first on airfield solar photovoltaic farm at Shannon Airport. Covering 5.5 acres and with a capacity of 1.2 megawatts, the installation is expected to supply up to 20 percent of the airport’s annual electricity demand and plays a central role in its long term decarbonisation strategy.

Looking ahead, the airport is supported by a 30 million euro sustainable investment plan running to 2030. This will further improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions through operational footprint consolidation, upgraded building insulation and the adoption of advanced heating and cooling systems, including heat pump technology.

Shannon Airport is also embedding circular economy principles across its operations. The fit out of its new Operations Centre and meeting rooms used predominantly remanufactured furniture, recycled paint and second life carpet tiles, extending the life of more than 70 items and preventing 4.4 tonnes of carbon emissions. This represents an 80 percent reduction in embodied carbon compared with a conventional furniture fit out, while delivering a modern and flexible working environment.
