Salvador Bahia Airport becomes the first in the Americas to reach Level 5

Salvador Bahia Airport, operated by VINCI Airports, has become the first airport in Brazil – and the entire American continent – to achieve Level 5 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. The airport achieved net zero for emissions under its control and is committed to reaching net zero for Scope 3 emissions by 2050 through close collaboration with partners and stakeholders.

The airport, which joined the programme in 2019, has reached this milestone through sustained and far-reaching action. Salvador Bahia Airport now generates clean electricity through two photovoltaic plants with a combined capacity of 6 MWp, supplying power both to its own operations and to cargo facilities operated by third parties. The airport has transitioned fully to renewable energy across all operations, including those of its tenants, and has replaced gas-powered equipment with electric alternatives across a range of activities. Its vehicle fleet has also been converted to electric or biofuel-powered models, further reducing direct emissions.

Alongside these operational improvements, the airport engages continuously with its stakeholders to encourage shared climate action and has taken responsibility for residual emissions by supporting certified carbon sequestration projects. This includes contributing to a 3,879-hectare reforestation initiative in the Corumbá region, which not only sequesters carbon but also brings meaningful socio-economic benefits to local communities through job creation.
