Kilimanjaro International Airport joins Airport Carbon Accreditation

Kilimanjaro International Airport has set a national benchmark as the first airport in Tanzania to join Airport Carbon Accreditation, achieving Level 1. Operated by the Tanzania Airports Authority, the airport has committed to measuring and inventorising its carbon footprint as the initial step on its decarbonisation journey.

To achieve this milestone, Kilimanjaro International Airport has implemented targeted staff training and specialist courses for its environmental team, focused on Airport Carbon Accreditation and carbon calculation tools. This has been accompanied by comprehensive mapping of greenhouse gas emission sources across the airport and a robust data collection effort to establish a clear emissions inventory. Looking ahead, the airport also plans to introduce alternative clean energy, focusing on solar and wind power.
