Vienna Airport achieves Level 3+ Neutrality

enero 10, 2025
We are delighted to announce that Vienna Airport in Austria has successfully upgraded to Level 3+ Neutrality of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.
Achieving Level 3+ Neutrality requires airports to expand their carbon footprint assessment to include a range of Scope 3 emissions. Additionally, airports must offset all remaining Scope 1 and 2 emissions using high-quality, internationally recognised carbon credits.
A cornerstone of Vienna Airport’s sustainability strategy is its focus on renewable energy production. The airport has installed ten photovoltaic systems across its premises, including one of Austria’s largest PV systems, operational since 2022, located directly south of Runway 11/29. These systems have a combined capacity of around 45 MW peak, producing approximately 45 million kilowatt-hours annually. This accounts for 50% of the airport’s total electricity requirements, with the remaining 50% met through certified hydropower.
Vienna Airport has also prioritised the transition to electric mobility, with approximately 450 e-vehicles already in operation, significantly reducing emissions associated with its ground operations. Additionally, the airport is enhancing efficiency and reducing resource consumption in the operational management of existing buildings through increased digitalisation, the accelerated adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM), and the implementation of improved technologies for machinery, heating, and air conditioning systems.
