Trieste Airport achieves Level 4

Trieste Airport in Italy has reached Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, reflecting its continued progress in carbon management, its commitment to reducing emissions and its alignment with global climate goals.

The airport is targeting net zero CO2 emissions by 2028, supported by on site renewable energy generation, fleet electrification and the development of an integrated intermodal transport hub.

This progress is underpinned by practical action already in place. In March 2024, the airport commissioned a 3,143 kW photovoltaic system, enabling it to generate, store and reuse renewable energy more effectively. In May 2024, it also began replacing part of its operational fleet with electric ground vehicles. Trieste Airport now produces 70 per cent of its energy needs from renewable sources and continues to strengthen its resilience through advanced battery storage.

Looking ahead, the airport will prioritise electric vehicles for all future Ground Support Equipment acquisitions, replace fossil fuel based heating with heat pumps by 2028, and deploy HVO100 biofuel in emergency generators where possible. It is also committed to working closely with stakeholders and strategic partners to help drive reductions in Scope 3 emissions across the wider aviation value chain.
