Rarotonga International Airport strengthens its carbon management efforts with Level 2 Airport Carbon Accreditation

Building on its commitment to decarbonisation since joining the programme in 2024, Rarotonga International Airport in the Cook Islands has achieved Level 2 of Airport Carbon Accreditation.

The airport has made rapid progress in developing the systems and processes required to advance its carbon management journey. Level 2 recognises airports that have not only mapped their carbon footprint, but are also actively demonstrating reductions in emissions under their direct control.

To achieve this milestone, Rarotonga International Airport established a comprehensive carbon management framework designed to support continuous monitoring and improvement of its environmental performance. The airport has implemented procedures to track fuel and energy consumption across its operations, providing the data needed to identify opportunities for further emissions reductions and support long term sustainability objectives.

A key element of the airport’s approach has been the integration of climate accountability into senior management responsibilities, ensuring that emissions management is embedded within decision making processes and operational planning. The airport has also invested in staff awareness and engagement, delivering training programmes that help employees understand their role in reducing emissions and improving environmental performance.
