Green Airports Recognition by ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East celebrates a decade of climate resilience

The ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East Green Airports Recognition marked its tenth edition this year, celebrating airports that promote environmental best practice to strengthen their resilience to climate change.

A total of 33 airports from across the region submitted initiatives demonstrating how they are addressing growing climate risks, including flooding, extreme weather, storm surges and water scarcity. Twelve airports received Platinum, Gold or Silver recognition across four passenger traffic categories, reflecting the wide range of practical solutions now being adopted to strengthen operational resilience.

This year’s Platinum winners illustrate the breadth of climate adaptation work underway across the sector. Hong Kong International Airport was recognised for applying advanced climate modelling aligned with IPCC scenarios to assess future flood risks, from seawall overtopping to drainage performance. Auckland Airport received Platinum for its Northern Airfield Climate Resilience Project, which paired upgraded stormwater infrastructure with New Zealand’s first Coupled Wetland Biofilter, combining flood protection with nature-based treatment. Nadi International Airport took a different but equally nature-led approach, planting more than 8,300 mangrove seedlings to shield its coastal boundary from erosion and storm surges while engaging local communities in the effort. Kaohsiung International Airport secured Platinum for its Building a Disaster Resilient Airport initiative, which strengthened drainage infrastructure and upgraded facilities to withstand extreme weather. All four Platinum winners are accredited at Level 4 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Alongside efforts to reduce carbon emissions through Airport Carbon Accreditation, airports across Asia Pacific and the Middle East are investing in resilient infrastructure, nature-based solutions and long-term planning to remain prepared for the growing impacts of climate change.
