Edmonton International Airport advances hydrogen innovation in winter operations

Edmonton International Airport, accredited at Level 3 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, is progressing its decarbonisation efforts through a hydrogen diesel dual fuel pilot project for runway snow sweepers, marking a first of its kind application globally.

The pilot is being delivered in partnership with Diesel Tech Industries and Alberta Innovates and focuses on high output airside equipment operating in extreme winter conditions. The initiative tests the integration of hydrogen into existing diesel engines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption while maintaining operational performance in challenging environments.

The dual fuel approach allows existing equipment to be retrofitted, offering a practical and scalable pathway to emissions reduction without the need for entirely new infrastructure. Data collected throughout the winter season includes fuel efficiency, system reliability and performance in cold weather conditions, supporting future decisions on wider fleet deployment.

The project forms part of the airport’s broader hydrogen strategy, developed through its Airport City Sustainability Campus. This initiative brings together industry, government and academic partners to test and scale clean energy solutions in a real operational environment.

Edmonton International Airport’s Hydrogen Hub further supports regional hydrogen development, positioning the airport as a testbed for clean aviation operations. The Edmonton region produces approximately 60 to 65% of Canada’s hydrogen supply, with annual production exceeding 2.5 million tonnes.
