Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport becomes the 30th pioneer worldwide to achieve Level 5

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in India has achieved Level 5, the highest level of Airport Carbon Accreditation. This confirms that the airport has reached net zero for its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and is now committed to achieving net zero for Scope 3 emissions by 2050.

The achievement marks also a milestone for the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, which now counts 30 airports at Level 5 only two years after the level was introduced. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport becomes one of seven Level 5 airports in the Asia Pacific and Middle East region, reflecting the growing maturity of climate action across the region.

The airport’s progress is the result of sustained investment, strong governance and a data driven decarbonisation strategy. Since August 2022, the airport has operated entirely on renewable electricity, substantially reducing its operational emissions. During the same period, it has improved its energy efficiency through major upgrades, including the installation of EC fans, the transition to LED lighting and the deployment of high efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. The full electrification of the airport’s vehicle fleet and the rigorous control of refrigerant leaks have reduced emissions even further. These actions are supported by upgrades to automation systems, the installation of CO2 based fire protection systems and reinforced internal accountability through an updated environmental, social and governance policy adopted in May 2025.

As a result of these efforts, the airport has eliminated emissions from its own operations and is now concentrating on reducing indirect Scope 3 emissions. This next phase of work is being advanced through long term structural improvements, close cooperation with aviation partners and the introduction of emerging low carbon technologies.

Since 2022, these combined measures have delivered more than a 98% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, marking a significant shift towards low carbon airport operations.

Reflecting on the achievement, a spokesperson for Mumbai International Airport Limited stated that the airport will continue to integrate environmental responsibility into the way it plans, delivers and operates its services, with the clear intention of setting new sustainability benchmarks within the Indian aviation sector.
