Catania Airport upgrades to Level 3

Catania Airport has successfully been upgraded to Level 3 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. Operated by SAC, the airport has broadened the scope of its carbon footprint mapping to include third-party emissions. This marks a key step forward in its efforts to drive collaborative climate action, involving airlines, ground handlers, concessionaires and other airport partners.

To support this transition, Catania Airport has implemented a range of impactful initiatives. These include replacing existing lighting systems with low-consumption alternatives, such as LED and fluorescent luminaires, and generating clean electricity through the installation of photovoltaic systems on car parks and passenger shelters. The airport has also enhanced its waste management through the separate collection of non-hazardous waste and strengthened environmental requirements in contracts with contractors, subcontractors and suppliers.

At the core of this progress is a strong commitment to stakeholder engagement. Catania Airport has developed a comprehensive Stakeholder Engagement Plan to manage relationships with key actors, including public authorities, airlines, service providers, the local community and passengers. Through constant and transparent dialogue, the airport ensures that stakeholders’ expectations are heard and addressed, building partnerships that contribute to a more sustainable future for all.
