Brussels South Charleroi Airport upgrades to Level 4+

Brussels South Charleroi Airport in Belgium has advanced to Level 4+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation, demonstrating its commitment to decarbonisation.

The Belgian airport, which joined the programme in 2022 directly at Level 2, has progressed rapidly and just three years later, it now stands among Europe’s most advanced airports in carbon management. This achievement reflects a structured and ambitious environmental policy with a clear objective: Net Zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, and Net Zero across the full value chain, including Scope 3, by 2050.

Brussels South Charleroi Airport has implemented a wide range of measures to reduce its operational emissions. These include gradually replacing airside vehicles with electric alternatives, optimising heating, ventilation and electricity systems, improving waste recycling and management, and installing solar panels on the roof of Terminal 2. Staff and partners have also been actively engaged, with awareness campaigns encouraging small but impactful actions to cut emissions.

As part of its Level 4+ accreditation , the airport has gone beyond direct emissions reductions by supporting two verified offsetting projects aligned with sustainable development. In India, a 60 MW wind power project in Karnataka will supply clean electricity to 100,000 people while avoiding 130,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. In Uruguay, an afforestation project is restoring more than 18,000 hectares of degraded land, contributing to carbon sequestration, sustainable forestry, and ecosystem recovery.

Since it joined in 2022, it has reached a new milestone every year, illustrating an ongoing, well-organised commitment to decarbonisation. By achieving level 4+, Brussels South Charleroi Airport demonstrates that it is every bit as good as the major European airports when it comes to certification and environmental initiatives. This is confirmed by its environmental permit, which was awarded a few weeks ago, which includes Carbon Net Zero by 2030 among its goals.”
