Almaty International Airport becomes Kazakhstan’s first airport to join Airport Carbon Accreditation

Almaty International Airport has joined Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 1, becoming the first airport in Kazakhstan to participate in the programme. Operated by TAV Airports, the airport is taking a structured first step towards managing and reducing its carbon footprint.

At Level 1 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, airports are required to measure and verify their carbon emissions. Almaty International Airport has completed a comprehensive carbon emissions inventory covering all airport facilities and has calculated its carbon footprint using internationally recognised methodologies, including those of ICAO and the GHG Protocol. This work includes the analysis of key sources of CO₂ emissions such as energy consumption, fuel use, equipment and machinery operation, and apron activities, alongside the establishment of emission monitoring and control at critical sites.

Almaty International Airport has also already implemented a number of decarbonisation projects. These include the introduction of the first electric tractor for aircraft towing, the installation of electric vehicle charging stations across the airport, the operation of ground power units at all air bridges, operating electric equipment at cargo operations. In addition, the airport is progressively transitioning from diesel powered equipment to electric alternatives, with 34 electric vehicles currently in operation.
