Sydney Airport achieves Level 4

July 10, 2025
Sydney Airport in Australia has advanced to Level 4 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, aligning with the global climate goals of the Paris Agreement. The airport is also committed to achieving net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.
Sydney Airport has taken decisive action to eliminate emissions under its direct control. From January 2025, the airport will source the equivalent of 100% of its electricity from renewable sources, addressing the 93% of operational emissions that fall under Scope 2. On-site generation will also increase with the rollout of a rooftop solar PV system, while HVAC systems have been optimised to improve energy efficiency through building management technologies. Progress on Scope 1 emissions includes reducing natural gas use and transitioning vehicles to low- or zero-emission alternatives. These efforts have already delivered results, with Scope 1 and 2 emissions per square metre falling by 10% in 2024 compared to the previous year.
Sydney Airport’s engagement with wider aviation stakeholders is central to its approach to Scope 3 emissions. A long-term strategy lays the foundation for sustained collaboration. Partnerships with airlines, ground handlers, and Airservices Australia focus on operational efficiencies such as continuous descent and climb procedures, and greater use of ground power units. The airport is also working with Qantas to explore the import and use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, and has introduced a Renewable Energy Matching Service to support tenants in sourcing clean electricity for their operations.
