Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport joins Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 3, bringing Mauritius onto the global map of airport climate action

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius has joined Airport Carbon Accreditation directly at Level 3, bringing Mauritius onto the global map of airports taking action on carbon management and emissions reduction. Operated by Airports of Mauritius, the airport is strengthening its approach to carbon management, emissions reduction and stakeholder engagement.

The airport has set a long term target to reduce its carbon emissions by 24% by 2035, excluding the contribution of future grid decarbonisation. This commitment is supported by an Environmental Policy Statement endorsed by the Airports of Mauritius Board in June 2026, setting out measures to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint and improve its environmental performance.

As part of its carbon management work, the airport is focusing on improving the efficiency of its infrastructure and operations. Measures include upgrading its Building Management System, expanding solar energy and LED lighting, optimising chiller operations and thermostat settings, and improving airfield lighting and HVAC systems. The airport is also working towards the electrification of its vehicles, buses and pick up fleet, alongside the introduction of eco driving practices.

Stakeholder engagement is an important part of the airport’s approach. Workshops are being held with internal and external stakeholders to build understanding of the Airport Carbon Accreditation process and support the collection of emissions data. The airport is also developing a newsletter programme, appointing energy champions within stakeholder organisations, conducting a passenger mobility survey and establishing an Environmental Committee to support collaboration across the airport community.

Through these measures, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is putting in place a structured approach to managing its emissions and working with stakeholders to support its longer term carbon reduction objectives.
