Rio de Janeiro – Galeão International Airport achieves Level 3

June 27, 2024

We are delighted to confirm that Rio de Janeiro – Galeão International Airport has met all the necessary requirements to upgrade to Level 3  Optimisation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

At Level 3, airports need to expand the scope of their carbon footprint assessment to include various Scope 3 emissions and present evidence of engaging with third-party operators to reduce these emissions. This builds on the continued efforts to reduce emissions under the airport’s direct control, which is the key requirement of Level 2 Reduction.

Rio de Janeiro – Galeão International Airport has invested in sustainable initiatives that aim to reduce its impact on the environment. Over the last ten years, the airport has reduced more than 55,000 tons of carbon emissions through its Solid Waste Management programme. Additionally, the airport has achieved a 25% reduction in energy consumption through efficiency measures and has reduced water consumption by 49%, while maintaining a 70% recycling rate for waste.

The airport has received an honourable mention from the Ciclo Orgânico project at Airports Going Green in 2017 and won the award at Green Airport, from ACI Latin America, in the Climate Change category in 2022.

Alexandre Monteiro, president of Rio de Janeiro – Galeão International Airport said: “RIOgaleão, one of the engines of Rio de Janeiro’s economy, is committed to sustainable growth of Rio de Janeiro, both from environmental and social standpoints. We are reaching a decade as the concessionaire of GIG with more than 5.000 environmental inspections and 39.000 hours of environmental training at the airport site, which reinforce the commitment to balanced development.”
