Nine Aena airports upgrade and renew their Airport Carbon Accreditation

September 25, 2025
Airport Carbon Accreditation is proud to announce that nine airports in Aena’s network in Spain have successfully upgraded or renewed their accreditation this year, marking a significant step forward in the operator’s roadmap towards achieving Net Zero by 2030.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, and Palma de Mallorca airports have each advanced to Level 4 of the programme. This achievement required the airports to set absolute emissions reduction targets aligned with the IPCC -1.5°C pathway and actively engage their business partners towards delivering emissions reductions. Among the projects supporting this milestone are large-scale installations of photovoltaic and geothermal energy, progressive renewal of boilers coupled with energy efficiency measures, electrification of the airport vehicle fleet, purchase of biofuels for boilers and vehicles, and the provision of electric charging points both for handling agents and in public car parks. The airports have also introduced sustainability requirements in contracts with service providers, implemented 400 HZ electricity supply for parked aircraft, and launched awareness-raising initiatives and working groups with third parties.
Meanwhile, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Ibiza, and Menorca airports have progressed to Level 3 of Airport Carbon Accreditation. At this level, airports are required to calculate their carbon footprint for both direct and indirect emissions, demonstrate effective carbon management procedures, show quantified emissions reductions, and establish plans to engage third parties in their decarbonisation efforts.
In addition, César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport has successfully renewed its Level 2 accreditation, demonstrating robust carbon management planning, while Santiago-Rosalía de Castro Airport has renewed at Level 1, which involves verifying the airport’s carbon footprint for emissions under its direct control.
