Multiple renewals, upgrades, and a Level 3 Optimisation milestone for DHMI airports

We are pleased to announce significant recent developments in the participation of airports operated by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI) in Turkey within the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable airport operations, DHMI continues to hold the distinction of being the airport operator with the highest number of certificates globally, with 43 of its airports currently certified.

Notably, 29 airports have upgraded to Level 2 Reduction, 2 airports have renewed their Level 1 Mapping certification, and 9 airports have renewed their certification at Level 2 Reduction. Additionally, Erzurum Airport has been upgraded to Level 3 Optimisation, making it the highest accredited airport operated by DHMI in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

In line with DHMI’s “Carbon-Free Airport Project”, which aims to control environmental impacts and ensure sustainable operations, DHMI airports have made efforts in reducing carbon emissions and promoting decarbonisation. This includes compliance with both national regulations and the international Airport Carbon Accreditation framework, focusing on carbon management, resource efficiency, air pollution control, waste management, and more.

The “Preparation of Climate Change Strategies Project” has been successfully completed at Erzurum, Gaziantep, Ordu-Giresun, and Milas Bodrum Airports, with plans to expand the project to other airports. Solar power plants have already been installed at Erzincan, Gaziantep, and Van Ferit Melen Airports, with additional installations planned for Sivas Nuri Demirağ Airport in 2024.

Electric vehicles are being phased into DHMI airports’ operations, replacing fossil-fuel-powered vehicles. To date, 61 TOGG electric vehicles have been procured, with plans for more. Electric baggage handling vehicles are now in use at all DHMI-operated airports, and further conversions of ground service vehicles are underway.

Additionally, DHMI is transitioning heating and cooling systems to lower-emission alternatives such as natural gas (LNG, LPG, CNG) and is switching to energy-efficient LED lighting systems in both terminal interiors and exteriors.
