Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport joins at Level 1

July 18, 2025

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in the United States has embarked on its decarbonisation journey by joining Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 1.

By entering Airport Carbon Accreditation, the airport commits to conducting a comprehensive assessment of its CO₂ emissions and establishing the framework for effective, measurable carbon reduction plans. Concrete progress is already evident: all lighting and signage at the airport have been converted to energy-efficient LED, significantly reducing energy use.

The airport operates the largest geothermal HVAC system of its kind at any US airport. This system harnesses natural underground temperatures to heat facilities in winter and cool them in summer, saving energy at a scale equivalent to planting 500 acres of trees.

In addition, the installation of a solar photovoltaic system has resulted in a 30% energy reduction across airport facilities, with an annual cut of 68 metric tonnes of emissions—equivalent to the emissions from burning 75,641 pounds of coal.
