Kenya Airports Authority upgrades four airports to Level 3 Optimisation

Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has reached a significant milestone in its decarbonisation journey, with four of its airports—Eldoret International Airport, Kisumu International Airport, Moi International Airport, and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport—successfully upgrading to Level 3 Optimisation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

KAA’s journey with Airport Carbon Accreditation began in 2021 at Level 1 Mapping. Since then, KAA has remained committed to enhancing its carbon management efforts. Achieving Level 3 Optimisation requires broadening the scope of the carbon footprint mapping to include third-party emissions. This is achieved through close collaboration with third-party operators such as airlines, ground handlers, and concessionaires.

To support its carbon reduction goals, KAA has implemented a series of impactful environmental initiatives. These include transitioning to energy-efficient LED lighting across its airports, installing solar-powered systems to reduce reliance on non-renewable energy sources, constructing green terminal buildings to enhance energy conservation, and conducting regular maintenance of generators and vehicles to optimise energy use.

A key factor in KAA’s success has been its proactive stakeholder engagement strategy. By conducting training sessions and fostering a culture of collaboration, KAA has encouraged its partners to adopt sustainable practices. This approach has not only strengthened efforts to reduce Scope 3 emissions but has also ensured that the aviation ecosystem operates with a shared commitment to decarbonisation.

KAA remains steadfast in its commitment to reduce its carbon footprint, with a long-term goal of achieving and maintaining net zero emissions by 2050.
