Kalmar Öland Airport joins directly at Level 3 Optimisation

We are pleased to announce that Kalmar Öland Airport in Sweden has successfully met all the requirements to enter directly at Level 3 Optimisation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Achieving Level 3 Optimisation demonstrates Kalmar Öland Airport’s commitment to expanding its carbon management efforts by including Scope 3 emissions in its carbon footprint assessments and providing evidence of collaboration with third-party operators to reduce these emissions. This milestone builds upon the airport’s ongoing commitment to reducing emissions within its direct control, with a long-term target of achieving net zero emissions across all scopes by 2045.

Kalmar Öland Airport has taken impactful steps to lower its environmental footprint. By replacing heavy vehicles with environmentally-friendly alternatives, transitioning from electric boilers to district heating, installing solar cells, and implementing geothermal heating, the airport has successfully reduced its carbon dioxide emissions by nine tonnes per year and cut other emissions by as much as 95%.

In addition to these measures, the airport has implemented enhanced systems for tracking energy usage and waste, allowing for more effective monitoring and reduction of consumption. Staff engagement in sustainable practices has also been increased, fostering a strong culture of environmental responsibility across the organisation.
