Helsinki Airport achieves Level 5, reaching net zero for emissions under its control

Helsinki Airport in Finland, operated by FINAVIA, has achieved Level 5 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, confirming net zero carbon balance for emissions under its control. This achievement makes Helsinki the fifth FINAVIA airport to be certified at this level, joining Ivalo, Kittilä, Kuusamo, and Rovaniemi.

To meet the criteria of Level 5, the highest level of the programme, the airport has reduced more than 90% of its Scope 1 and 2 emissions and committed to reaching net zero for Scope 3 emissions by 2050.

FINAVIA has taken major steps to increase the use of renewable energy across its operations. All of its airports are powered entirely by certified wind energy, while Helsinki Airport also generates electricity through its own solar plant. In addition, the airport’s field vehicles run on zero-emission diesel produced from waste and leftover materials.

The airport’s carbon reduction efforts extend across the entire aviation value chain. FINAVIA collaborates with airlines and air navigation services to optimise airspace use and reduce fuel burn, including by shortening taxiing distances. It has also helped fund the development and testing of Finland’s first electric aircraft, highlighting its active role in the broader decarbonisation of aviation.

By switching entirely to renewable or CO₂-free energy, we have reduced our carbon emissions as close to zero as is technically and economically feasible. Finavia is committed to being a leader in sustainable aviation,”
