Guanajuato Airport upgrades to Level 3 Optimisation

February 11, 2025

We are excited to announce that Guanajuato Airport in Mexico has successfully upgraded to Level 3 Optimisation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), Guanajuato Airport is expanding its emissions assessments to include Scope 3 emissions. This achievement reflects the airport’s commitment to working collaboratively with airlines, ground handlers, and concessionaires to reduce the overall environmental impact of airport operations.

GAP has a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The group has set ambitious 2030 goals, aiming to reduce its controlled emissions by 90% through a combination of renewable energy investments, energy efficiency improvements, and innovative emissions reduction strategies.

A key driver of this transformation is the significant investment in solar power, with all GAP airports now generating clean energy. In 2023 alone, these systems produced 15,697 MWh of solar power, reducing overall energy consumption by 12% and cutting emissions by 7,417 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent. This capacity is set to expand further, with an additional 6 MW of solar power generation in the pipeline.

Beyond renewable energy, GAP has introduced energy efficiency measures, optimising the use of equipment and infrastructure to lower consumption. Efforts to transition to hybrid and electric vehicles are underway, alongside initiatives to improve fuel efficiency in operations. To further minimise its environmental impact, GAP is actively phasing out high-GWP refrigerant gases, replacing them with lower-emission alternatives.

Recognising that meaningful change requires collective action, GAP has strengthened stakeholder engagement efforts. By expanding its environmental team, is taking a proactive role in supporting airlines, concessionaires, and other partners in measuring, reporting, and reducing their emissions through dedicated engagement plans.
