Trapani International Airport joins Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 2

Trapani International Airport in Italy has joined Airport Carbon Accreditation at Level 2. Operated by Airgest S.p.A., the airport has established its carbon management approach and is making progress towards reducing its carbon footprint, as part of its longer term objective of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

To achieve Level 2, the airport was required to demonstrate two key elements: a completed calculation of the emissions under its direct control and the introduction of actions aimed at reducing them. Airgest first calculated the airport’s carbon footprint, covering Scope 1 emissions from fuels, company vehicles and refrigerant gases, as well as Scope 2 emissions linked to the electricity purchased and used to operate the airport.

In 2024, Airgest S.p.A. recorded a significant reduction in emissions compared with 2023, driven mainly by a sharp fall in diesel consumption for heating and the absence of refrigerant gas leaks. In 2025, emissions remained well below the base year, supported by the commissioning of the airport’s photovoltaic plant and the gradual introduction of more energy efficient solutions.

Alongside its emissions assessment, Airgest S.p.A. has prepared a Carbon Management Plan to guide the management and reduction of its climate impact over time. The plan sets out internal responsibilities, reduction measures, performance indicators, verification activities, and training and communication initiatives for staff.

The next phase will depend on delivering the commitments already made. These include replacing the company fleet, introducing 400 Hz systems, and increasing photovoltaic generation through the planned walkway to the train stop.
