Queen Alia International Airport inaugurates new solar farm to power 25% of its operations

juin 23, 2025
Queen Alia International Airport, a Level 4+ accredited airport under Airport Carbon Accreditation operated by Airport International Group, has inaugurated the 4.8 MWac (Megawatts of alternating current) Shams al Mattar Lil-Taqa Solar Farm, marking a major step in its decarbonisation journey. The facility was officially opened on 24 April 2025 by Jordan’s Minister of Transport, H.E. Eng. Wesam Tahtamouni, in a ceremony attended by Airport International Group leadership, government officials and project partners.
The solar farm, built on 65,000 square metres of previously unused land, is designed to generate over 10.5 GWh of electricity annually—equivalent to the consumption of more than 3,000 homes. This will supply nearly 25% of Airport International Group’s total operational energy needs and reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 6,000 tonnes per year.
Developed by Shams al Mattar lil-Taqa, a subsidiary of Kawar Investment, the project enables Queen Alia International Airport to generate clean energy on site without disrupting airport operations. It also contributes to Jordan’s wider renewable energy targets, reinforcing its position as one of the largest solar-powered airports in the MENA region.
This project supports the airport’s roadmap to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and complements Airport International Group’s wider sustainability measures, including noise and air quality management.
