Åre Östersund, Kiruna and Visby airports reach Level 5 of Airport Carbon Accreditation

juin 30, 2025

Three more airports operated by Swedavia – Åre Östersund, Kiruna and Visby – have achieved Level 5 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, confirming a net zero carbon balance for emissions under their control. Each airport has reduced more than 90% of its Scope 1 and 2 emissions and committed to reaching net zero for Scope 3 emissions by 2050.

This achievement brings the total number of Swedavia airports accredited at Level 5 to seven, alongside Stockholm Arlanda, Ronneby, Göteborg Landvetter and Malmö airports. Swedavia, a global pioneer in aviation decarbonisation, is aiming for all ten of its airports to achieve Level 5 by 2027.

Swedavia’s approach to decarbonisation includes sourcing 100% of its heating and electricity from renewable sources, and targeting an 80% reduction in emissions from construction and civil engineering works by 2035. The airports operator also aims to support third parties in achieving net zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050, while enabling infrastructure for electric flights and hydrogen to be in place by 2030.

Swedavia considers the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft, and other emerging technologies as essential for the effective decarbonisation of the aviation sector.

Fredrik Jaresved, Chief Strategy Officer at Swedavia, commented: “The fact that three new Swedavia airports now achieve the highest climate certification is a clear acknowledgement of our long-term and determined work to drive the climate transition of aviation. With seven out of ten airports certified at level 5, we show that it is possible to combine critical infrastructure with climate leadership.”
