Milan Bergamo Airport reaches Level 4

septembre 2, 2025

Milan Bergamo Airport, the third busiest airport in Italy, has been upgraded to Level 4 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. Operated by SACBO, the airport’s journey within the programme began over a decade ago and reflects its commitment to achieving net zero emissions from directly managed airport activities by 2045.

Level 4 recognises not only the airport’s continuous reduction of CO₂ emissions but also the active engagement of the entire airport community, including airlines, handlers, suppliers, local authorities, and strategic partners, in driving climate action forward. A key milestone in this achievement is the development of a long-term, absolute carbon emissions reduction target that aligns with global climate goals.

To accelerate emissions reduction, Milan Bergamo Airport has adopted a biofuel blend as a temporary solution and is on track to achieve 100% electrification of its ground support equipment (GSE) fleet, with all ground power units (GPUs) scheduled for electrification by 2030. The airport is also harnessing renewable energy through the installation of solar panels on parking areas and acquiring 100% green electricity under an agreement with its energy provider. Innovative heating solutions, including heat pumps and fuel cell-powered electric boilers operating solely on green energy, have been implemented to completely eliminate CO₂ emissions from water heating. Additionally, energy efficiency is being enhanced through the deployment of energy monitoring systems and smart LED lighting.

Giovanni Sanga, President of SACBO, said: “This new certification confirms the effectiveness of SACBO’s actions, from CO₂ reduction to digitalisation and infrastructure works, as well as operational methodologies that help cut ground waiting times with engines running.”
