Malta International Airport reaches Level 3+

décembre 18, 2025

Malta International Airport has upgraded to Level 3+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation, achieving carbon neutrality for emissions under its direct control. The airport joined the programme in 2016 and has set the objective of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.

The airport has reduced its carbon emissions by 32% compared to its 2015 reference year, supported by continued investment in energy efficiency and clean energy. Key measures include the replacement of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems with more energy-efficient alternatives and the expansion of onsite renewable energy generation capacity. In 2024, residual emissions were addressed through the purchase of highly verified emission avoidance credits, in line with the requirements of the programme.

Malta International Airport is also strengthening its approach to indirect emissions by engaging with stakeholders to collect Scope 3 emissions data, laying the groundwork for broader emissions reductions beyond its own operations. These actions support the airport’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
