Galápagos Ecological Airport achieves Level 4+

octobre 25, 2025

Galápagos Ecological Airport, the world’s first airport built under sustainability criteria in Ecuador, has achieved Level 4+ in Airport Carbon Accreditation. This milestone places the airport among the highest-accredited in the Latin America & Caribbean region, reflecting its strong commitment to decarbonisation and its vital role in safeguarding one of the world’s most fragile ecosystems.

Located at the heart of the Galápagos Islands, the airport opened in 2012, and joined Airport Carbon Accreditation in 2015. In recent years, the airport has evolved into an integrated sustainability model, combining technical innovation with a deep respect for its natural surroundings.

Among its key initiatives are the use of renewable energy sources, the operation of biodigesters for organic waste management, and the implementation of educational programmes such as Galápagos EduLab and PlastiLab, which promote environmental awareness and responsible consumption.

Beyond its technical achievements, this milestone embodies Galápagos Ecological Airport’s philosophy: sustainability is not a destination, but a way of operating. In the Galápagos – a UNESCO World Heritage site where every action has an impact – the airport demonstrates that aviation can be a force for conservation as well as connectivity.

Reflecting on this achievement, Jorge Rosillo, General Manager of Galápagos Ecological Airport, said: “At Galápagos Ecological Airport, we believe that every airport operation can be an opportunity to care for the planet. This achievement not only fills us with pride but also drives us to keep innovating.”
