Birmingham Airport reaches Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation

Birmingham Airport in the United Kingdom has achieved Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, recognising its commitment to aligning its carbon management strategy with global climate goals and delivering absolute emissions reductions across its operations.

Birmingham Airport, that joined the programme in 2023, has set a target to reach net zero emissions from airport controlled operations by 2033 and is continuing to invest in the infrastructure and technologies needed to achieve that ambition.

A central element of the airport’s approach has been the integration of sustainability into both operational activities and long term investment planning. Recent initiatives include the installation of energy efficient LED lighting across airport facilities, supported by smart control systems that help optimise energy use. The airport has also upgraded its building and energy management systems to improve efficiency and reduce operational emissions.

Renewable energy plays an increasingly important role in Birmingham Airport’s strategy. The delivery of a 6.8 MW solar photovoltaic array has strengthened the airport’s ability to generate clean electricity on site, reducing reliance on external energy sources and contributing to lower carbon emissions.

Alongside these measures, Birmingham Airport has continued the transition of its vehicle fleet through investment in electric vehicles and the adoption of lower carbon fuels. These actions are helping reduce emissions from day to day airport operations while supporting the airport’s wider net zero objective.

Level 4 also recognises the importance of collaboration in achieving meaningful emissions reductions. Birmingham Airport works closely with airlines, ground handling companies, transport providers and concession partners to encourage and support emissions reductions beyond those directly under its control. Through this engagement, the airport is helping build a broader approach to decarbonisation across its airport community.
