Adelaide and Parafield Airports are the first airports in Australia to achieve Level 5

novembre 18, 2025
Adelaide and Parafield Airports have become the first airports in Australia to achieve Level 5 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, marking a major milestone for climate action in the country. The two airports have reduced more than 90% of their Scope 1 and 2 emissions and have committed to reaching net zero for Scope 3 emissions by 2050 or sooner. Their achievement brings the total number of Level 5 airports in the Asia-Pacific region to six.
Both airports have delivered sustained and comprehensive efforts to decarbonise their operations. Adelaide Airport now generates more than 15 per cent of its terminal electricity needs through extensive onsite solar installations. Across both airports, electricity consumption has been significantly reduced through a large-scale LED lighting upgrade and a commitment to select energy-efficient options during major equipment replacements. Remaining electricity needs are met through a renewable power purchase agreement sourced from a South Australian wind farm, ensuring that all electricity consumed is fully renewable. In parallel, the airports are also accelerating the uptake of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, maintaining open access to their fuel infrastructure and offering commercial incentives to encourage its use among airline partners.
To address residual emissions, Adelaide and Parafield Airports have invested in certified carbon offsets from a land regeneration project in South Australia, supporting both climate restoration and local environmental benefits.
Stefano Baronci, Director General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, said: “Achieving Level 5 of the Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme reflects their sustained effort and collaboration with stakeholders to reduce emissions and this accomplishment aligns perfectly with airport industry’s shared vision of achieving net zero goals by 2050. Asia-Pacific is the second region in the world with the highest number of Level 5 accredited airports, six in total, with airports in India, Australia, and New Zealand joining this exclusive club. We hope this milestone encourages other airports in the region to continue strengthening their environmental performance and contributing to a more sustainable aviation sector.”
Adelaide Airport Managing Director, Brenton Cox, mentioned: “Our participation in this program is recognition of the importance of long term sustainability to aviation sector and the value of collaboration to achieve our industry goals. Achievement of Level 5 accreditation validates that we have transitioned from carbon management to decarbonisation, with credible evidence of emissions reduction and long-term planning. »
