Saint Nazaire Montoir Airport upgrades to Level 4

Saint Nazaire Montoir Airport in France has achieved Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, aligning its carbon management ambitions with global climate goals and transforming its operations with a focus on absolute emissions reductions, while also strengthening stakeholder engagement.

Operated by VINCI Airports, the airport has delivered substantial emissions reductions across its own operations, cutting Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by more than a third since 2019. This progress has been driven by a combination of targeted measures, including the replacement of a fuel oil boiler with a propane system, the introduction of a 100% renewable electricity contract backed by guarantees of origin, and ongoing efforts to optimise energy use across the site.

Energy efficiency improvements have been implemented throughout the airport, from upgrading runway and terminal lighting to LED systems to refining heating and cooling settings. Additional measures include limiting the use of generator sets to essential regulatory requirements and continuing the modernisation of heating infrastructure. The airport is also progressing the transition of its vehicle fleet towards lower emission models.

Beyond its own operations, Saint Nazaire Montoir Airport is actively engaging partners to address Scope 3 emissions. A key initiative is the introduction of sustainable aviation fuel produced from used cooking oil. By 2025, half of the fuel distributed at the airport consists of this alternative fuel, supported by collaboration with Airbus and the operation of Beluga aircraft. This fuel offers significant lifecycle emissions reductions while remaining fully compatible with existing aircraft and infrastructure.
