Tirana International Airport achieves Level 3 Optimisation

enero 22, 2025

We are delighted to announce that Tirana International Airport in Albania has successfully achieved Level 3 Optimisation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Achieving Level 3 Optimisation requires airports to include Scope 3 emissions in their carbon footprint assessments and demonstrate tangible engagement with stakeholders such as airlines, local authorities, and commercial partners to collectively reduce environmental impact.

A key achievement in the airport’s sustainability journey is the installation of one of Europe’s largest solar farms, which has significantly reduced dependency on non-renewable energy sources. Additionally, the airport has transitioned to LED lighting across its airside operations and facility buildings, reducing energy consumption by 50%. Ground operations have also seen a transformation with the adoption of electric vehicles, contributing to zero-carbon emissions.

Tirana International Airport has actively engaged its stakeholders in these efforts, promoting joint action and awareness to collectively reduce the environmental footprint of airport operations.

Olivier Jankovec, Director General, ACI EUROPE commented:  “Congratulations to Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza on reaching Level 3 Optimisation within Airport Carbon Accreditation! Level 3 means achieving a significant level of performance and maturity in delivering on the commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Kudos to the entire team and I look forward to celebrating more of their accomplishments on their journey towards net zero.”
