Sharjah International Airport aligns its carbon management strategy with global climate goals

Sharjah International Airport in the United Arab Emirates has achieved Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, marking an important milestone in its long standing commitment to reducing carbon emissions and strengthening environmental performance.

Having first joined the programme in 2014, the airport has continued to advance its carbon management approach and now aligns its ambition with global climate goals through a focus on absolute emissions reductions. Level 4 recognises airports that not only manage and reduce their own emissions, but also demonstrate that their carbon management strategy is consistent with the objectives of the Paris Agreement while engaging stakeholders across the wider airport ecosystem.

Environmental sustainability is embedded within Sharjah Airport’s operational strategy. The airport has established a formal carbon management framework that supports continuous monitoring of emissions, effective stakeholder engagement and the implementation of targeted measures to reduce its environmental impact. Through this structured approach, the airport is working to lower both its carbon footprint and energy consumption while maintaining high operational standards.

A range of initiatives have contributed to this achievement. The airport has progressed the electrification of its fleet, expanded the use of renewable energy solutions and implemented advanced waste reduction measures. Investments in climate resilient infrastructure are also helping prepare the airport for future environmental challenges while supporting long term sustainability objectives.

Among these initiatives is the installation of solar powered lighting systems across parking areas and pedestrian walkways. By reducing reliance on the conventional electricity grid, these systems contribute to cleaner energy use while supporting the airport’s broader environmental goals.

Sharjah Airport’s efforts are closely aligned with the vision of the Emirate of Sharjah and the United Arab Emirates, including the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy. As part of this commitment, the airport continues to invest in energy efficiency projects, renewable energy deployment and collaborative programmes that deliver measurable environmental benefits.
