Nine ASUR airports in Mexico achieve Level 3 in Airport Carbon Accreditation

marzo 20, 2025

Nine airports operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) in Mexico have successfully upgraded to Level 3 in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. This achievement highlights ASUR’s commitment to strengthening its carbon management efforts by expanding its emissions reduction strategy beyond its direct control and collaborating with third-party operators such as airlines, ground handlers, and concessionaires.

At the heart of ASUR’s approach is a strategic climate action plan that aligns with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), reinforcing its commitment to carbon neutrality and net zero emissions. Its Environmental Policy has been updated to ensure that climate considerations are embedded at every level, from strategic decision-making to operational processes.

Through its participation in the Global Compact’s Climate Ambition Accelerator programme, the group has gained access to best practices and peer-to-peer learning opportunities, further strengthening its decarbonisation efforts. Key personnel, including administrators and managers, have also undergone specialised training in greenhouse gas measurement, reduction, mitigation, and offsetting.

Investing in innovative technology has been a major driver of ASUR’s carbon reduction journey. More than half of its airports in Mexico now generate clean energy through solar panel installations, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. Additionally, battery energy storage systems have been introduced at several airports to enhance efficiency. Mérida and Cancún airports have also made significant progress towards sustainable ground operations by implementing an electric vehicle fleet, helping to lower emissions from airport ground activities.

ASUR has also expanded its focus to include Scope 3 emissions, engaging its entire airport ecosystem in the process. By working with key stakeholders to measure and manage indirect emissions, the group is taking a proactive approach to reducing aviation’s environmental impact.

The nine airports that have successfully upgraded to Level 3 are: Tapachula Airport, Villahermosa Airport, Veracruz Airport, Oaxaca Airport, Mérida Airport, Cozumel Airport, Cancún Airport, Huatulco Airport, and Minatitlán Airport.
