Munich Airport Achieves Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation

Munich Airport has reached Level 4 of Airport Carbon Accreditation, reflecting the alignment of its long term absolute carbon emissions reduction target with the 1.5°C objective of the Paris Agreement. The airport is advancing absolute emissions reductions while strengthening engagement with stakeholders across its operations, as it works towards its target of net zero emissions by 2035.

Progress to date has been supported by a combination of measures. These include the expansion of photovoltaic capacity, initiatives to support the uptake of sustainable aviation fuel such as incentive schemes and participation in aireg, and a range of efficiency improvements including the growth of electric mobility, the transition to LED lighting, enhanced thermal insulation and the renovation of ventilation systems. The airport has also replaced natural gas with biomethane in its combined cycle power plant and secured an offshore wind power agreement.

Further steps are planned to continue this trajectory. These include ongoing electrification of the vehicle fleet, additional solar installations on rooftops and open areas, and the transition to more climate friendly technologies across airport facilities. In 2025, Bavaria’s largest public charging station was opened at the airport, offering passengers expanded access to electric vehicle charging.

A further milestone has been the agreement with RWE for the supply of 40 gigawatt hours of renewable electricity annually from a new offshore wind farm in the North Sea, expected to be operational by early 2027. Together, these actions demonstrate a structured and long term approach to reducing emissions and supporting the wider decarbonisation of air transport.

It confirms that we are well on track toward our goal of operating the airport in a way that leaves no climate-damaging CO2 in the atmosphere by 2035.” Several hundred measures have already been implemented at the airport to reduce CO₂ emissions. Level 4 recognizes that we have also strongly involved the companies and stakeholders based at the airport in our climate protection efforts. Twenty measures alone are being implemented for this purpose.»
