junio 23, 2025
At the 35th ACI EUROPE Annual Congress & General Assembly in Athens, Maastricht Aachen Airport was presented with the 2025 Eco-Innovation Award, awarded by ACI EUROPE in association with the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. The award was handed over by Apostolos Tzitzikostas, European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, in recognition of the airport’s exceptional innovation and environmental leadership.
Maastricht Aachen Airport received this year’s honour for its Electrifly project—a groundbreaking initiative showcasing the viability of fully electric, cross-border, door-to-door travel. The project integrates electric vehicles and aircraft into a seamless, multimodal journey entirely powered by renewable energy.
The jury commended the project’s ambition and originality, noting its success in bringing together a broad network of stakeholders to demonstrate what the future of zero-emission air transport could look like. The concept stood out as a scalable and forward-thinking model for sustainable mobility across Europe. The project’s collaborative nature and system-wide approach to electrification positions Maastricht Aachen Airport as a pioneer in sustainable aviation.
“We are incredibly proud that Electrifly is being recognised with this award. It is an important milestone, not only for MAA, but for regional aviation across Europe – we have shown how regional airports can take bold steps to accelerate innovation,” says Roel Ubaghs, Head of Sustainability, Innovation and IT at Maastricht Aachen Airport.
Also acknowledged during the ceremony was Avinor Stavanger Airport, which received a Highly Commended mention for its leadership in electrifying ground operations and producing renewable energy on-site, exemplifying the airport industry’s transformation into integrated “ener-ports.”
