Daniel K. Inouye International Airport reaches Level 3 Optimisation

enero 16, 2025

We are delighted to announce that Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Hawaii, USA, has successfully upgraded to Level 3 Optimisation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Achieving Level 3 Optimisation requires airports to expand their carbon footprint assessments to include emissions from third-party operators, such as airlines, ground handlers, and concessionaires.

Daniel K. Inouye International Airport has set an ambitious target to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045 for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. A key part of this strategy is its energy savings performance contract, which saves 67 MWh of electricity annually, equivalent to $25 million in cost savings. This includes upgrades to lighting systems, HVAC equipment, and the addition of solar photovoltaic systems. The airport has already installed solar photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 8 MW DC, supported by a 1 MWh energy storage system for load shifting, further reducing its reliance on non-renewable energy sources.

The airport is also making significant efforts in decarbonising its ground operations. All light-duty vehicles used by the airport operator are fully electric, and a pilot project for autonomous electric shuttles is underway, aiming to replace diesel-powered buses. Additionally, the airport has integrated sustainability into its infrastructure development, with a new concourse and a consolidated rental car facility, both of which are LEED Gold certified.
