Ankara Esenboğa Airport achieves Level 4+, becoming the highest accredited airport in Turkey

mayo 22, 2025

Ankara Esenboğa Airport has reached Level 4+ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, becoming the highest accredited airport in Turkey.

Operated by TAV Airports, a member of Groupe ADP, Ankara Esenboğa Airport has been a longstanding participant in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, having joined in 2010. A long-term carbon management plan has been developed to support its emissions reduction targets, which are fully aligned with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Concrete actions are already in place, and remaining emissions are offset through high-quality, internationally recognised carbon offsetting projects. In parallel, TAV Airports continues to invest in capacity-building across its workforce, with employees regularly trained on environmental protection, energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction. This achievement supports TAV Airports’ wider ambition to reach carbon neutrality across all its airports by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

Serkan Kaptan CEO at TAV Airports stated: “Ankara Esenboğa became Türkiye’s first carbon-neutral airport in 2014. We are now proud to be the first in the country to attain Level 4+ certification under the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. As of today, four of our airports are carbon-neutral, and a total of 11 are enrolled in the program. Through investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, we are steadily advancing toward our net zero goal. We will continue to work with all stakeholders to support the aviation industry’s efforts in combating climate change.”

Olivier Jankovec, Director General at ACI EUROPE mentioned: «We are proud to see Ankara Esenboğa Airport, operated by TAV Airports, leading the way for Turkish aviation on the path to net zero. Reaching Level 4+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation is a major achievement, making it the top performer for carbon management in the country. This is the result of a strong and lasting commitment to climate action, which started back in 2010 when the airport first joined the programme. With on-going CO2 reductions, robust emissions targets aligned with global climate goals and a clear long term carbon management plan, this new milestone reflects both ambition and sustained efforts to decarbonise. A huge well done to the whole team as they continue their journey towards net zero by 2050.»
