Dalaman Airport achieves Level 3 Optimisation in Airport Carbon Accreditation

We are delighted to announce that Dalaman Airport in Turkey has successfully upgraded to Level 3 Optimisation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Achieving this level requires airports to broaden the scope of their carbon footprint mapping to include third-party emissions. This is accomplished through close cooperation with key partners such as airlines, ground handlers, and concessionaires.

A key element of Dalaman Airport’s sustainability efforts is the development of Turkey’s largest solar power project in an airport terminal. By installing photovoltaic solar panels on the terminal roof, the airport is now able to meet over 55% of its total energy needs with solar power, with the long-term goal of transitioning to 100% renewable energy. To further enhance energy efficiency, a sensor-based control system has been introduced, which optimises heating, air conditioning, and lighting by adjusting usage based on movement within the terminal. The airport has also completed a full transition to LED lighting technology, significantly reducing electricity consumption.

Beyond its energy initiatives, Dalaman Airport is committed to minimising aircraft emissions while on the ground. The airport is working closely with airlines and ground handling services to limit the use of Auxiliary Power Units (APUs), reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions when aircraft are parked on the apron. Additionally, the airport has introduced electric airside vehicles, replacing conventional fuel-powered transport to further cut carbon emissions.

Dalaman Airport is also extending its sustainability efforts to the wider community. The airport prioritises local and regional suppliers for food and other services, reducing the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation while supporting the local economy.
