COP29 host’s capital airport joins Airport Carbon Accreditation directly at Level 2

The busiest airport in Azerbaijan, Heydar Aliyev International Airport, located in the vibrant capital city of Baku, has officially joined the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme directly at Level 2 Reduction. This marks a major milestone for both the airport and the country as they continue their journey toward reducing their carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable aviation industry. As the main gateway for delegates attending the upcoming COP29, this accreditation will highlight airport climate action during the most important climate conference of the year.

As part of its commitment to sustainability, Heydar Aliyev International Airport has recently modernised its lighting systems, water supply, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. These upgrades not only improved operational efficiency but also significantly reduced carbon emissions by eliminating the use of R-22 refrigerants and mercury vapour—crucial steps in lowering the airport’s overall carbon footprint.

By adhering to the core principles of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, our airport intends to further develop its environmental initiatives and achieve higher levels of carbon accreditation, contributing to the global goal of Net Zero by 2050.”
