Brussels South Charleroi Airport: First in Belgium to achieve Level 4 Transformation

June 12, 2024

We are delighted to announce that Brussels South Charleroi Airport in Belgium, has met all the necessary requirements to upgrade to Level 4 Transformation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme. This achievement makes Brussels South Charleroi the first airport in Belgium to reach this level of carbon management maturity.

Achieving Level 4 required Brussels South Charleroi to develop a long-term target for absolute carbon emissions reduction, fully aligned with the objectives to limit global warming to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels, in line with the IPCC recommendations and the Paris Agreement.

Aiming to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, Brussels South Charleroi Airport has implemented various concrete initiatives that significantly reduce its carbon footprint. These include the gradual electrification of airside vehicles, optimisation of electricity and heating/ventilation systems, improvement of the waste sorting system, installation of photovoltaic panels on the roof of Terminal 2, and raising staff awareness about small daily actions to reduce CO2 emissions.

Additionally, Brussels South Charleroi Airport is engaging all its stakeholders, including airlines, as part of their Collaborative Environmental Management Committee. This committee unites the airport’s stakeholders with the aim of reducing emissions from their operations both on-site and in the surrounding area. Moreover, the airport is in close discussions with airlines to promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels and improve operations to minimise its environmental impact.

Philippe Verdonck, CEO at Brussels South Charleroi Airport said: “The airport has made enormous progress in reducing its carbon footprint and playing an active role in the fight against climate change. This success was made possible thanks to the unwavering commitment of our partners and the implementation of carefully considered measures.”

Olivier Jankovec, Director General at ACI EUROPE, commented: “Big kudos to Brussels South Charleroi Airport for being the very first airport in Belgium to achieve Level 4 Transformation in the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme! This huge accomplishment is the result of the hard work and passion of the entire CRL team. At Level 4, CRL is committed to a long-term carbon reduction pathway fully aligned with the Paris Agreement, reflecting their dedication to effective decarbonisation. By actively involving third parties in their mission to reduce emissions, the airport is also extending its outreach and leadership. A heartfelt congratulations to everyone at CRL for their visionary efforts and unwavering dedication to carbon management.”
