Brussels Airport achieves Level 4+ Transition, becoming the highest accredited airport in Belgium

We are pleased to announce that Brussels Airport in Belgium has successfully upgraded to Level 4+ Transition of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme, making it the highest accredited airport in Belgium.

To achieve this level, Brussels Airport has set an ambitious absolute emissions reduction target covering all Scope 1 and 2 emissions, fully aligning with the objectives of the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to below 2°C. In addition, the airport is committed to offsetting any remaining Scope 1 and 2 emissions using internationally recognised carbon credits, and has set a target to reach net zero carbon by 2030.

Brussels Airport has been CO₂-neutral since 2018 and continues to take further steps to reduce its carbon footprint and improve environmental sustainability. As part of its Carbon Management Plan, the airport has implemented various measures, including transitioning its heating systems to fossil-free alternatives, replacing old buildings with energy-efficient ones, and electrifying its vehicle fleet.

Moreover, the airport’s Stakeholder Partnership Plan, developed in consultation with relevant airport partners, outlines actions to minimise CO₂ emissions across the airport’s operations. These efforts include encouraging ground handlers to electrify their fleets and implementing a ‘Waste Charter’ to reduce waste and promote intelligent recycling.

Projects like Stargate further highlight Brussels Airport’s leadership in sustainable aviation, setting a powerful example for our entire industry.”
