Broome International Airport achieves Level 3+

February 19, 2026

Broome International Airport in Australia has upgraded to Level 3+ of Airport Carbon Accreditation, marking an important step in the airport’s structured approach to carbon management and emissions reduction.

By achieving Level 3+, the airport has demonstrated that it is not only managing and reducing emissions under its direct control, but also compensating for the remaining carbon emissions that cannot be reduced further through the use of recognised offsetting mechanisms.

Key actions supporting this achievement include the roll out of LED lighting and smart building systems to reduce energy consumption across airport facilities. A significant contribution has come from the installation of on site solar generation in 2023, which has substantially reduced grid electricity consumption and lowered the airport’s overall carbon footprint. In 2024, Broome International Airport installed three separate solar arrays across the airport, including as part of shaded parking in the terminal precinct. These investments show how regional infrastructure can deliver practical, locally driven climate action at scale.

“As a regional airport serving a globally recognised tourism destination, we recognise that sustainability is increasingly central to our competitiveness and long-term resilience,” said Andrew Lane, CEO of the airport.

Stefano Baronci, Director General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, mentioned: “We congratulate Broome International Airport for achieving Level 3+ of the Airport Carbon Accreditation. By positioning itself as one of the leaders in efficient carbon management, Broome International Airport demonstrates a strong commitment to building a more sustainable future. This aligns with our industry’s collective vision of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.”
