Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport Achieves Level 3 Optimisation in Airport Carbon Accreditation

January 20, 2025
We are delighted to announce that Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport in Serbia has successfully upgraded to Level 3 Optimisation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.
Achieving Level 3 Optimisation requires airports to expand their carbon footprint assessments to include various Scope 3 emissions, such as those generated by airlines, ground handlers, and concessionaires.
Operated by VINCI Airports, Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport is fully committed to ambitious sustainability targets, aiming to halve its carbon footprint by 2030 and achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. The airport has undertaken transformative initiatives to achieve these goals, including replacing its old oil boiler with a state-of-the-art trigeneration plant powered by gas. This facility, with a capacity of 44 MW, provides electricity, heating, and cooling, delivering significant energy efficiency gains.
Additionally, the airport has invested in renewable energy, installing a 1 MW photovoltaic power plant and integrating solar-powered lighting systems into public parking areas. Energy efficiency measures have also been implemented extensively, with 95% of lighting systems replaced by LED technology.
Belgrade Airport has made considerable progress in electrifying its ground operations. It has expanded its charging infrastructure with 39 EV chargers and introduced solar canopies equipped with fast-charging capabilities in the car park near the terminal. These measures align with the airport’s strategy to decarbonise its ground handling vehicles and support sustainable mobility.
In January 2024, the airport initiated the development of a comprehensive Energy Master Plan and Decarbonisation Roadmap, which will guide its efforts to meet VINCI Airports’ sustainability goals and further reduce emissions.
