Belfast City Airport upgrades to Level 3 Optimisation as the first in Northern Ireland

February 21, 2024

Belfast City Airport is the first airport in Northern Ireland to achieve Level 3 Optimisation of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme.

Belfast City Airport has achieved significant reductions in emissions from its own sources and at Level 3 it is actively engaging and motivating its entire ecosystem to manage and reduce carbon emissions.

The airport is implementing a robust sustainability strategy to mitigate the environmental impact of its operations. Key achievements include transitioning to 100% electricity from renewable sources and installing a complimentary water fountain in the terminal, significantly reducing single-use plastic and saving the equivalent of 3,330 plastic bottles. Additionally, upgrading to energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the terminal and car parks has substantially reduced energy consumption, further decreasing its carbon footprint.
