Airport Carbon Accreditation recognised with Sustainability Advocate Award 2024

June 18, 2024

In a remarkable achievement, Airport Carbon Accreditation was honoured with the Sustainability Advocate Award 2024 by the Association of Association Executives at the International & European Association Success Awards. The award ceremony took place in the historic Old University in Graz, where Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, proudly represented Airport Carbon Accreditation.

The Sustainability Advocate Award celebrates innovative sustainability initiatives that consistently deliver impactful results. This year, Level 5—the topmost level of the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme—was recognised for its outstanding contribution to the decarbonisation of aviation.

The judges, comprised of executives from various associations across Europe, praised Level 5 and the results Airport Carbon Accreditation has achieved over the years. “A very innovative and well-executed project, enabling airports to reach and maintain a net zero carbon balance for emissions. Congratulations on this remarkable achievement and great contribution to sustainability,” they remarked.

After receiving the award on behalf of Airport Carbon Accreditation, Olivier Jankovec said: “We are thrilled to have our efforts to guide and support airports in their decarbonisation journey recognised by this important award. Airport Carbon Accreditation has, over the past 15 years, become the global standard for airport carbon management. Level 5 truly represents a step-change in airport climate action, providing the blueprint for achieving a net zero carbon balance and addressing Scope 3 emissions. Rolling out Level 5 confirmed the airport industry’s determination and readiness to deliver on its ambitious climate commitments and contribute to the decarbonisation of aviation, fully aligning with the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement.

To date, 14 pioneering airports globally have met the rigorous requirements of Level 5. These airports have reduced their emissions by 90%, utilised negative emission technologies to remove the remainder of their footprint from the atmosphere, and committed to achieving net zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050 or sooner.

This award is a testament to the dedication of our global airport community towards decarbonisation and highlights our pivotal role in supporting aviation’s decarbonisation.
